Thank you for reply to my discussion. I am going to look for these books and use them as resources for my research. Thank you again. If you think of or come across any peer reviewed journal articles that support aquatic therapy let me know.

Aquatic therapy and stroke survivors

I am currently a graduate student in an occupational therapy program. I am working on my graduate research project and my topic is aquatic therapy focusing on stroke rehabilitation. I am wondering if anyone has resources to get peer reviewed journal articles on the benefits of aquatic therapy. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Hi Stephanie,

I am a watsu therapist and see many different clients, and have had a lot of success with one who recently had a stroke. All I have is my anectdotal evidence from him, but would love to keep up with what you find out. I would like to talk to Dr's at the stroke clinic here in Seattle and hopefully get client referrals.

I have a reference but with limited info: Balance research done on stroke patients (Morris et al, 1996) I strongly recommend you get in contact with Johann Lambeck, an international Halliwick gruru. His email address is: lambeck.hydro@freeler.nl. He is internationally renowned for his involvement in the Halliwick programme and for his participation in the international aquatic therapy seminar given yearly in Switzerland.

I have been working with stroke survivors for the past 8 years and I've had good to great results from within the year of the stroke to 4 years post stroke. It's amasing what the properties of water can do along with proper use of equipment. Often we get into a comfortable routine as therapists and forget that each client is unique even if they present the same diagnosis. That is where we get the best results, when we consider the individual's unique needs. I am a kinisiologist with masters courses in aquatic therapy. I have been in the aquatic therapy arena for 16 years. If I can be of any help for your research, let me know.

I would be more than happy to, Stephanie! What is your Master's in? Is it ok that I am a nurse and not a therapist?

Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise recently published an article, Insight into Muscle Activity during Deep Water Running by Masumoto. It shows improved muscle strength and ventilation. Very technical but supportive. Sharon
