Hi all aquatists, I am off and running with aquatic therapy in the east bay at the Berkeley High SChool warm pool (92 degrees, 2200 sq ft.) which is an OK facility, but old and unsafe seismically. It will be torn out and replaced in the next 2-3 y...
This group has been created for ongoing connection/sharing among attendees of the San Mateo Aquatic Therapy for the Pediatric offered by ARN on March 27-28, 2009, CA.
I am beginning a private practice in aquatic therapy for sensory-motor and physically challenged students in the East Bay of the San Francisco Bay Area (Albany-Berkeley)Warm pool access is difficult at this time. I am working with the pool task forces of the Albany Unified School District and Berkeley Unified School District to determine if either of these school districts is able and willing to provide an aquatic therapy facility that can meet the needs of the more severely involved students with a 90 degree pool. Right now both districts are in the design/planning process of rebuilding pool facilities and are reluctant to build a warm pool for rehabilitation and OT/PT/Speech impaired students. Any advice and support you can provide is welcomed. Ihave trained with Susan Nachimson, SLP/aquatic therapist and recently with Jennifer Tvrdy OT. I am in the pool 2-3 x/week (approx. 6 hours /week currently) volunteering with children and adults who are friends, family and past students and plan to be in business officially by the end of May. I will devote the summer to building the private practice. My business name is Innovative Therapies. I now have business cards and I am looking into making a website.
Your discipline or title (PT, OT, CTRS, ATC, SLP, Watsu practitioner, adapted aquatics instructor, whatever!)
28 years as a public school speech/language pathologist with an emphasis on early childhood/preschool/autism spectrum kids and a small diverse private practice which I plan to grow and eventually work out of the school job. I also have access to a warm therapy pool at the Rossmoor Retirement Community in Walnut Creek (where my 91 year old father lives). I am looking into hanging my shingle out there to work with the geriatric population ( stroke recovery).
Location (city, state, country)
Albany, CA, USA
What temperature, depth(s) and approx dimensions is your therapy pool (if you have one):
The Berkeley High School warm pool is 92 degrees, approx 4 ft to 12 ft in depth, 20 feet x 30 feet. It is not seismically safe and will be torn out in the next year. The Rossmoor Aquatic Center is a beautiful, new facility in Walnut Creek, CA. It is a private pool (25x25 ?)operated by the retirement community and is in use for classes and drop in use most of the time. I do not know if they would be able to offer it for a workshop space. I can look into this.
Do you have any teaching experience?
Not quite yet. I could assist SLP Susan Nachimson as she trained me in 2002. After I have a year or two under my belt I could see teaching workshops solo. I love to teach and do so in many other aspects of my job.

This group could explore, discuss and learn from each other the many benefits of working in warm water with the approach that humans have potential to recognize the potential for movement and alignment in the physical, emotional and energetic body.
