Update on my brain injured client with trach

I have been working with my 21 yr old client who has been unable to sit up, move or talk for 5 years due to brain injury from a car accident, for a year now.  I see her once a week.   I have witnessed over the year increasing alertness, smiles, and communication.  She can now move both of her legs.  She just started working with an OT on land who has helped her to hold her head up on her own, after 2 sessions.   I discovered a place near Seattle, where I live, called Pushing Boundaries, which…See More

Mysterious neurologic condition improves in the water

I have another new client, a 60 year old attorney, who came to see me because of a tremor in his right arm.   It is very severe, and he was diagnosed with Parkinson's 6 years ago.  However, his neurologist changed the diagnosis  to a different condition which he should have died from by now  He now does not  know what to make of it.    It is affecting his speech and his walking.    He speaks very slowly and with difficulty.   Until  6 years ago he was  a climber, surfer, skiier, as well as a…

Watsu success with a 21 yr old paralyzed girl with a tracheotomy!

This client came to see me for watsu for the first time in November (2010), and has been coming 3-4 times a month ever since.  She was in a car accident 4 years ago,  and has had the top half of her skull removed.  She is brain damaged and has been mostly immobile  for 4 years. She can see and hear but cannot move  or talk.  Her parents are very positive that she can recover a lot of her functioning.  We were all worried about her trach tube, as it cannot get wet. Her first session we…

update on my post stroke client

I saw my client for the second time after his stroke today. He reported that after the last session he noticed some significant changes. Ever since the stroke he said he could feel a disconnect between his right and left brain, and that it took a lot of energy to sense that all the time. After the first session he said that was gone! He still has the lower functioning of his left side, but the energy drain had receded, and his brain felt 'more connected'.

He also reported that he feels… Continue

Aquatic Bodywork after a stroke

One of my regular clients had a stroke 2 weeks ago. He is a fairly active woodworker and guitar player in his mid fifties. His wife called me about a week after his stroke and wanted to get him in for a session asap. She was hoping it would be good for him in conjunction with the other rehab he would be doing, which hadn't started yet. When he came in he was walking with a cane, as his whole left side was not functioning as well as before. He was having problems with his balance and peripheral… Continue

Hi Laura,
I would certainly pass anything I discover, we experiment with a lot of things but always try to keep it fun. I would emphasize though I not a profession in aquatics just a Father.
I do feel that water has some sort of special quality that reaches children with ASD, we sometimes take another boy with us and you can see the the effects take hold, it wares off but the more we do it the longer the effect I've noticed two-three days now and though we work gross motor skills, I have seen fine motor improvements to a high degree.
I would be happy to share any ideas, since we are winging it who knows we stumble upon something, I'll be doing something with fine motor with coloured marbles and sequintial order in the pool under the water as soon as I make the board, anything else were doing you would already know (hoops, ball toss, sensory stuff, ect.)
Nice to meet you Laura, chat me up anytime.

Thanks again Laura, for your kind words and time. We do alot of winging it! I either make of improvise another product that was never disigned for water theapy to work it either needs to float or sink (depending on the need).
The toys are alot of fun but I'm also looking at water resistance and movement for groos motor skills, my local library has some books but then again I'm winging it.
I guess I'll have to learn to swim now, lol.
Thanks
Paul

Working with military personnel and vets

If you're interested in working with military personnel and vets, please take a look at this video and the comments it has brought. As warm water aquatic bodyworkers our practice can evoke even more strongly the softness of voice and approach that is being RECONSIDERED here ... at least at first.Aside from the use of language and tone that more effectively matches the receiver's own ...  I'm reminded of how, with people who are wound-up or muscle-bound-up such that their bodies also carry that…See More
