update on my post stroke client

I saw my client for the second time after his stroke today. He reported that after the last session he noticed some significant changes. Ever since the stroke he said he could feel a disconnect between his right and left brain, and that it took a lot of energy to sense that all the time. After the first session he said that was gone! He still has the lower functioning of his left side, but the energy drain had receded, and his brain felt 'more connected'.
He also reported that he feels that his… Continue

Aquatic Bodywork after a stroke

One of my regular clients had a stroke 2 weeks ago. He is a fairly active woodworker and guitar player in his mid fifties. His wife called me about a week after his stroke and wanted to get him in for a session asap. She was hoping it would be good for him in conjunction with the other rehab he would be doing, which hadn't started yet. When he came in he was walking with a cane, as his whole left side was not functioning as well as before. He was having problems with his balance and peripheral v… Continue

Grief and healing

Today I had the privilege of working with a young woman who recently lost her 7 year old son. He died suddenly from a lung infection that they and his doctor thought was a regular flu. Being a mother myself, it was so incredibly moving and painful to hear her story. I felt myself responding with empathy, grief for her, fear for my own children, admiration for her courage and strength, so much emotion in a moment between innocently asking her about her kids (she had put 'mom' as her occupation on… Continue

Thanks again Laura, for your kind words and time. We do alot of winging it! I either make of improvise another product that was never disigned for water theapy to work it either needs to float or sink (depending on the need).
The toys are alot of fun but I'm also looking at water resistance and movement for groos motor skills, my local library has some books but then again I'm winging it.
I guess I'll have to learn to swim now, lol.
Thanks
Paul

Hi Laura,
I would certainly pass anything I discover, we experiment with a lot of things but always try to keep it fun. I would emphasize though I not a profession in aquatics just a Father.
I do feel that water has some sort of special quality that reaches children with ASD, we sometimes take another boy with us and you can see the the effects take hold, it wares off but the more we do it the longer the effect I've noticed two-three days now and though we work gross motor skills, I have seen fine motor improvements to a high degree.
I would be happy to share any ideas, since we are winging it who knows we stumble upon something, I'll be doing something with fine motor with coloured marbles and sequintial order in the pool under the water as soon as I make the board, anything else were doing you would already know (hoops, ball toss, sensory stuff, ect.)
Nice to meet you Laura, chat me up anytime.
