Advanced Certification for Aquatic Therapy

There is the APTA Aquatic Section's current project of a certification specialty for PT's in the aquatic realm- this is a HUGE project that can give us insite on basic and advanced skills.
Anyone interested in this topic?

Clinical Education in the water

Okay! Can we talk about what the BASICS are for an entry level clinician working with people in the water? The background of Rehab professionals that perform aquatic therapy in the water quite varied and inconsistant.

I'm a clinical instructor with a need to teach the student PTA's(or PT's if they are so inclined) basic skills in the water. Does anyone have a list? (I do, and I'll share it if someone's interested).

Thanks! I'm not a great blogger, it's only because you have to sit still for a period of time, but I'm interested in the art of what we do as well as the science, technique and skill....I'll try to stay tuned! Thanks for your continued contribution to this community!

Hello Dee - the Aquatic Therapy blog carnival is a virtual event. If you have a relatively current blog posting on a related topic you can submit it for potential inclusion.

I will be writing a posting in early December based around what I hope will be an interesting mix of submissions (quite a few in already).

I'll also make sure I alert this network to that 'carnival' post when it is online (on my weblog).

Hopefully this will happen several times a year so you can watch that space and see if you'd like to join in at some point.

You can also comment on the carnival posting when it comes out. Thanks for all your input here.

I would like to know more about the basics for entering into aquatics. I am an experienced pediatric OT. Some of the cont. ed courses seem geared towards therapists who already have experience with aquatics.

Hi Ronee,
I see from patients from the deck as well, I don't ever chart (anymore) if I'm in the pool. I think it's really your call if the person is needing hands on or close supervision. For higher level people, in my case- in a SwimEx -there is little room for me if I'm in there and there's alot of movement. If you prefer to treat in the pool, you may consider a check list type note that is super fast to fill out. Do you treat more than one person per hour? Let me know if you need examples of checktype notes!
